The Apple iPad is clearly the best tablet device out there. It offers world-class performance and boasts a top-notch build quality. After all, not for nothing has the iPad been the tablet device to beat ever. Since it was launched more than a decade ago.
However, if you feel that the iPad is immune to defects and other issues, you need to know the truth. For instance, display issues are quite common with the Apple tablet. Fortunately, most of those can be dealt with simple tips and tricks, though in extreme cases, you might be required to go for an iPad screen repair job. However, take a look at the list of things to do when the iPad’s screen turns black.
1. Turn the brightness on
Sometimes, it might seem like the iPad is on but the screen is dark. You might feel a sublime vibration and the tablet might feel warm to touch as well. But the display is off. The solution to this problem might just be the brightness setting. In that case, simply ask Siri to set the brightness to the maximum.
2. Battery issues
Sometimes, issues with the battery or the power management feature could be at fault. This is generally the case with older iPad devices, though newer devices can also face similar issues.
To rule out such a cause, put your iPad on charge and see if that helps.
- However, it is recommended you charge your iPad directly by connecting it to the mains and not via another device such as a laptop or a power bank.
- Also, keep it on charge for quite some time and see if that helps. A minimum 20 minutes is recommended, though some say their iPad display comes alive after it is put on charge continuously for two days.
- Further, check the cables and the adapter used for charging. Preferably, use a different adapter and/or cable and see if there is any difference.
3. Restart your iPad
A simple restart is often considered the holy grail of all processes to deal with many hardware or software issues.
- The process to do that for iPad models with no Home button is to press and hold on to the Power button at the top along with either of the Volume buttons.
- Hold on to this until the Power slider appears.
- Drag the slider to the right for the tablet to shut down.
For older iPad models with a physical Home button, press and hold on to the Power button until the slider appears.
- Drag the slider as before for the tablet to turn off.
- To restart, press and hold the Power button again until the Apple logo appears.
With iOS 11 or later versions, you can also restart via Settings > General > Shut Down.
You will see the ‘Slide to power off’ setting.
4. Do a hard reset
A reset can be considered as a more severe form of restart and is often the best thing to do if a simple restart doesn’t solve the problem.
- To hard rest an iPad with no physical Home button, press and release the Volume up and then Volume down button in quick succession.
- Thereafter, press and hold the Power button until the iPad restarts.
- For previous generation iPads with a physical Home button, press and hold the Home button and the Top side buttons for at least 10 seconds till the Apple logo appears.
5. Check surrounding temperature
Often, the ambient temperature could be the villain as the iPad has been designed to operate optimally within a specific temperature band. Any deviation to that by a wide margin can cause several issues with the iPad, including a black screen.
- The obvious thing to do if your iPad is being operated in extremely hot conditions is to shut it down and let it cool.
- Prevent exposure of the iPad to direct sunlight.
- Similarly, keeping it in the freezer or in front of an AC or cooler can be equally damaging as the sudden variation in temperature can cause the internals as well as the display to malfunction.
- Same is the case if the surrounding is extremely cold. In that case, keep the iPad in a warm place for it to get back to its senses.
- Resume using the device only after you are in a place where the surrounding temperature is within the recommended setting.
All of the above should be a handy guide to the things you need to do if your iPad display has turned black and become unresponsive. However, if nothing helps, an iPad screen repair job might be necessary and it’s best to get in touch with technology geek or reliable experts to set things right.
